How Effective is Your Brushing?

Posted .

You’ve been taking care of your teeth for years, but would you be surprised to learn that even if you brush and floss every day, there may be a few things you could do a little better?

For example, did you know you could be damaging your gums if you brush too hard or use a toothbrush with bristles that are too firm? Similarly, did you know that you should buy a new toothbrush every three or four months? When choosing your new toothbrush, please choose one with soft bristles and a head you can navigate comfortably in your mouth.

Also, while some people dislike fluoride, it is useful for strengthening your teeth. Still, others prefer brushing with a whitening toothpaste in hopes of enhancing their pearly whites. In reality, there isn’t anything wrong with brushing with either of these toothpastes. However, if you are going to use a whitening toothpaste, we recommend alternating with a fluoride toothpaste.

Finally, do you spit your toothpaste out then rinse your mouth when you’re done brushing? If so, you’re right to spit your toothpaste out, but would you be surprised to learn that you don’t need to rinse your mouth out? Rinsing won’t hurt your teeth, but the more time your teeth stay in contact with fluoride the better.

If you follow this advice, you’ll be able to get the most out of brushing. If you would like to learn more about the best way to brush, please don’t hesitate to contact All Stahr Dental PSC at 859.278.9391. Dr. Smith, Dr. Stahr, Dr. Smith, and our team are eager to hear from you.
