What You Need to Know About Dental Bridges

Posted .

Are you are missing one or more teeth and considering a replacement? Dr. Gregory Stahr might recommend a dental bridge. Here’s a brief introduction to dental bridges:

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge is a dental appliance with a fake tooth called a pontic and two crowns on either side of the gap which are placed over your real teeth. Dr. Gregory Stahr will usually only recommend a bridge if the teeth on either side of the gap are weak and need extra support.

There are two types of bridges–fixed and removable:
-Fixed bridges are cemented to your teeth.
-Removable bridges are adhered to your teeth with a clasp and can be taken out when sleeping or to clean.
Fixed bridges tend to be more popular, but All Stahr Dental PSC offers both to accommodate your individual needs.

What is the process of getting a dental bridge?

It may vary based on your personal situation, but here is the general process:

First, in order to prepare your teeth for the two crowns, Dr. Gregory Stahr will eliminate most of their enamel structure. Then they will create a mold of the mouth, especially the area where restoration is needed. Dr. Gregory Stahr may give you a temporary bridge to fit over the gap while a permanent dental bridge is created from the mold in a dental laboratory.

At your next appointment, we’ll place the bridge and check for proper fit. We may schedule a follow-up visit to check the status of the bridge if needed.
